Scientists Create 3D-Printed Human Tongue For Research

SCIENTISTS CREATE 3D-PRINTED TONGUE – If you thought that nothing could beat a human’s experienced senses, then these scientists are about to prove you wrong.

Recently, scientists made a 3D-printed model featuring a synthetic soft surface with tongue-like features that could be used to test food products. Along with this, it could also be used to test dry mouth therapies.

According to an article from EANDT, the design presents a sophisticated yet accurate representation of the human tongue’s topology, elasticity, and wettability. The team behind the project gathered silicon impressions of tongue surfaces from fifteen willing participants.

Afterward, they were optically scanned to map the surface of the tongue capturing its density and average roughness. Then, computer simulations along with mathematical modeling were used to artificially create a 3D-printed surface as a mold that housed the synthetic tongue.

The synthetic tongue model could help increase development productivity for sensory trials. As per the article, Professor Anwesha Sarkar from the University of Leeds said:

Harnessing expertise from multiple STEM disciplines, we’ve demonstrated the unprecedented capability of a 3D printed silicone surface to mimic the mechanical performance of the human tongue

Meanwhile, Dr. Efren Andablo-Reyes, the lead author on the study stated:

Recreating the surface of an average human tongue comes with unique architectural challenges. Hundreds of small bud-like structures called papilla give the tongue its characteristic rough texture that in combination to the soft nature of the tissue create a complicated landscape from a mechanical perspective
